Your Resume is Worthless — Skills-Based Hiring is The Future of Work
We’re on the precipice of a major shift in the labor market. And no, I’m not talking about remote work.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is leading the way as we transition into a skills-based economy.
On January 25, the governor, Maura Healey, issued Executive Order №627 titled “Instituting Skills-Based Hiring Practices.” This is the first skills-based hiring directive issued by a state government for the explicit purpose of establishing a precedent for others to follow.
The idea of skills-based hiring isn’t new. A number of prominent companies like Google and Bank of America began eliminating educational requirements in the 2010s. Thanks to the shift to remote work and the desire to show efficiency as a pathway to profitability, more and more employers are rethinking how they acquire and retain human capital in the first place.
This has significant implications for the future of work. Millennials were the guinea pigs in a grand economic bargain to invest in education as a way to access better employment opportunities outside of manufacturing.
