Paying Rent Was Supposed to Boost My Credit Score — It Tanked It Instead

I never set out to become a writer. In fact, my dream was to become a spy (I came thiiiiiis close). I accidentally became a professional writer when I started writing on the internet back in 2019.

Since then I’ve learned some of the ins and outs of writing. No, you won’t make money with Google Ads. Yes, you’re going to need a digital product of some sort — like a course or template — if you actually want to make money. And no, you won’t make a living right away. It’ll take a couple of years to establish yourself, build up a network, and create enough content that showcases your writing skills.

After I had been writing on my own for a bit, a couple of editors thought my writing was good enough to pay me for it. That’s how I also accidentally stumbled into freelance writing. One thing led to another and now it’s a significant portion of my income.

I like freelance writing because it provides predictability and a degree of stability that independent content creation does not. Instead of relying on a wonky algorithm to eke out a living — ahem Medium — many freelance clients pay a flat rate. Some rates are abysmal, sure, but if you’re a good enough writer and choose your clients wisely, it can be a lucrative way to make money.
