I’m Tired Of Spending Money On Bad Food In Lame Restaurants Too

A provocative article by Rocco Pendola recently came across my feed. In it, he argues that going out to eat is basically:

Going through the motions of going out to restaurants and bars only to be charged an amount of money that absolutely is commensurate with the costs restaurants and bars incur to do business, but absolutely is not commensurate with the quality, value and overall experience they provide.

I think he’s onto something.

I don’t know about you but I, too, have become quite fatigued with our going out culture. Nights out are fun, but are they worth the price tag?

Many restaurants and bars are overhyped. They nuke their appetizers in toaster ovens and pour pre-made cocktails from taps. $50 later you’re not buzzed, still hungry, and wondering if you could’ve made the same thing at home for a fraction of the price (the answer is yes).

The quality of the whole dining out experience has declined. And we’ve let it happen. As Rocco notes, we keep “going through the motions” to keep subpar businesses afloat.

To be fair it isn’t the servers’ fault or anyone who works in the industry for that matter. It’s just business. The value proposition of the restaurant business model has simply changed. We just…
