If You Think Tipping Is Bad, This is Far Worse

We’ve finally reached a point in America where we’re fed up with tipping culture.

According to a 2023 study by Pew Research, the vast majority of Americans are tired of being asked to leave a tip everywhere they go. And it makes sense, it’s more ubiquitous than ever before.

A bride-to-be went viral after she shared her experience of being asked to leave a tip while shopping for a wedding dress. This shows how pervasive tipping culture has become.

Part of the problem is that businesses aren’t the only ones asking their patrons to leave a tip — the systems they use to process payments are asking too. Companies like Square and Clover have incorporated tipping into their business model. The higher your bill — taxes and tip included — the higher the fee they are able to collect from the merchants they service.

But if you think tipping is bad, things might be going from bad to worse. Instead of just asking for a tip, some businesses are now tacking on fees — like a health surcharge — to cover the rising cost of labor.
